Dear Mr. Burke:

Thank you for you letter expressing concerns about income assistance policies.

Since forming government, we have spent a lot of time reviewing programs and policies; we have been measuring their effectiveness and making changes in order to strengthen them.

I am pleased to say we have been able to raise income assistance payments to better help people in need.

I have noted your recommendation for a further increase.

You have raised a concern specific to the ‘five week month’ – I have shared that concern with the Minister of Employment and Income Assistance, the Honourable Claude Richmond, and have asked that his office respond to you directly on that point.

I appreciate you taking the time to write.

I wish you well with your creative writing projects.

Sincerely,
