Russell Smith, one of Victoria’s many classic bohemian artists of the last century, and  our mutual friend, circa 1990, when he lived, fitfully, in a downtown studio at Johnson and Douglas, above the present Blenz.

The studio had perfect north-facing light coming in through a large arched window.  That light illuminated one of my paintings shown here on the wall behind Russell.

Entitled ‘Queen of Peace,’ I used a colour photo I took of it on a poster for a Julio Cabrera dance at the Queen Victoria, and later, Russell won the original tondo on wood in a LA ROSA subscription drive.

He paid twenty hard-earned dollars to support Victoria’s ‘quircky and sporadic ‘ (as Robert Amos called us) transcultural arts revue, LA ROSA.

Later, needing more work, Russell moved out of the studio, back east to Hamilton.  David writes and phones him from time to time.  It would be neat if he found this posting, somehow, and commented, to update us…

Hope you are well, Russell.  Hope you still have that painting with you…

PEACE
